Weekend destinations in Bulgaria: Medieval rock church of Saint Marina
Wondering where to go for a one-day trip, or just wanting to explore more of Bulgaria? Here is a great destination for you.
The Medieval rock church of Saint Marina is a unique place full of mystery and wonder. In the past, this particular spot was used by the Thracians for their ancient rituals. Later it was used by monks for spiritual enlightenment. The church itself was built recently with donations and volunteer work.
The place is very beautiful, especially on warm autumn days. You can take beautiful pictures on the hanging bridges, take a sip from the healing waters and just admire the amazing views.
Location: Karlukovo, about 1h. - 1.30h. from Sofia. You mostly drive on the highway and the road is good.
1. You can take the tourist path from Prohodna cave (The eyes of God). The path is not very difficult and it's circular. We recommend you take the one on the right from the back of the cave. You will reach the National cave house "Peter Tranteev" and from there it's 30 min only downwards. It is a bit slippery and steep so it's recommended to wear good shoes and be very careful. You can go back to Prohodna cave by the second path and make a full circle.
2. Directly from National cave house "Peter Tranteev"
Tips:
You can combine this path with The Eyes of God cave for a full experience.
You can also take a walk on Geopark Iskar - Panega, which is very close.
Wear good shoes and appropriate clothes for hiking.
We wouldn't recommend it for small children, as the path is very steep at some places.
